If there was any part of Mexico that I was nervous about driving through, es war der Norden des Landes auf crossing the border. It was time to trust the Mexican girlfriend. Und ausserdem, Ich sah auf der Karte, die San Luis Potosi nicht zu weit im Norden war sowieso, so I thought, ¿porque no?

The 5 days we ended up spending in La Huasteca Potosina are still amongst my favorite spent in Mexico to date. I’m not one for ranking places & stacking them against each other, but to give you an idea, I believe that this little corner of Mexico has more natural wonder packed into it than any part of Costa Rica that I’ve been to (aside from the beaches). But that’s all part of the adventure, and in a day and age where all the good spots are quickly being swarmed by tourists & clogged with construction, La Huasteca Potosina can be refreshingly primitive.

Our Couchsurfer in San Luis Pososi city imparted this last minute wisdom to Gio & Ich, als wir bereit, das Raster für ein paar Tage in La Huasteca zu gehen. Wir hatten alle unsere Ziele bereits geplant, but the sincerity in his eyes & our mantra to always “go with the flow,” especially when it’s a trusted local’s advice, convinced us to pencil in Media Luna as our first destination.

Media Luna ist schwer zu beschreiben, – it’s like it can’t figure out whether it wants to be a lake, a river, or a series of canals. Aber eine Sache ist sicher, es ist ein schöner Ort, den Tag mit Freunden und Familie zu verbringen, grill out & maybe even camp.
Tip: Did you know it’s possible to scuba dive this natural wonder? Check out Tauchschule Crescent. Wie Sie im Video sehen, there is another world on the bottom of this natural spring, and there have even been remains of wooly mammoths discovered in these crystal clear waters with visibility up to 20-30 Meter.

Wie man dorthin kommt: Located 140km due east of San Luis Potosi city. Nehmen Sie die Autobahn 70 towards Rio Verde for 126km (78 miles) to Ciudad Fernandez. Puente de Dios
Translated literally as the “bridge of God,” it was the opposite of Media Luna in that we had high hopes for this place after hearing quite a bit about it.

Tip: For me, there’s no greater swimming buzzkill than to be forced to wear a life jacket, especially when they’re those old, moldy & lumpy orange life jackets that look like they haven’t evolved since the days of the Titanic. All the signs here say that swimming with a lifejacket is mandatory, but you should just ignore them like we did. Niemand hat jemals etwas gesagt, and we had an awesome, unrestricted splash about for the ages.
The rules of Puente de Dios – Las reglas del Puente de Dios

Wasserfälle Tamasopo
If y’all couldn’t already tell, I’m a big fan of waterfalls. Da war ich noch ein Kind, meine Familie, die auf Wanderungen immer in den Wald gehen und “collect waterfalls” (as my mom put it). Ich wuchs sogar mit einem nach oben 186 footer (57m) about a mile from my house in Georgia!
Ich finde es selten vor, dass jede Art von signifikanten Wasserfall in einem besiedelten Gebiet liegt (town, city, etc.), but Las Cascadas de Tamasopo break the mold in that they are located smack dab in the middle of town!
There are 4-6 gorgeous cascades ranging from about 40-60 feet (15-20m) in der Höhe, die mit Seilschaukeln in verführerischen blauen Swimmingpools verschütten nach unten und alles! Diese Liegeflächen haben nicht die starken Strömungen, die Puente de Dios tut, so I’d say it’s much more family friendly here. Tip: mitten in der Stadt gelegen ist, it’s an obvious choice for the people of Tamasopo & surrounding communities to come spend their Saturdays & Sundays with the family here. Do yourself a favor & visit on a weekday like we did. Wir waren so ziemlich die einzigen Leute dort, but with all the empty restaurants & commons areas, it was apparent that the place gets pretty crowded.

We spent 5 Roadtripping Tage alle über La Huasteca, but just barely scratched the surface of this extraordinary & still largely undiscovered corner of Mexico!

Me alegro escuchar que te haya ayudado. Es una zona maravillosa. La parte 2 nunca salió porque mi novia y yo cortamos jaja, así que no me daba las ganas de publicarlo! Pero váyanse a La Cascada Tamul! Vale la pena conocerla de arriba de caminata y abajo en lancha. Y a sótano de los golondrinas!
Hola, me encanto la manera en que detallabas tu viaje por la huasteca potosina. Tengo planeado este verano viajar con mi novio y teniamos dudas en cuanto al transporte.
Al estacionarte no te preocupaba que algo le pasara al carro? Estamos pensando que seria mejor rentar un auto porque los tours se ven bastante caros y seria mucho dinero gastar en 5 tours. Espero tu respuesta, besos!
Gracias por las palabras! Siempre hay que asegurar que el carro este estacionado en un lugar seguro o vigilado, a menos que sea en el campo en el medio de la nada!
No nos paso nada malo, pero anden con sentido comun y estoy de acuerdo, hay que rentar un carro porque la Huasteca no tiene mucha infrastructura y la mitad de la aventura es el camino! Buena suerte!

Wow, como me trai recuerdos este lugar. mis padres son de cuidad valles y desde pequena me llevaron a la huasteca potosina. Suelo ir cada ano por un par de semanas y cada ves conosco un lugar diferente, ya pasaron 25 anos y aun no termino de conocer todo lo que la huasteca tiene que ofreser. Los lugares que has puesto son los mas comunes pero existen otros sitios muy bonitos que aun no son muy conosidos. Los precios son muy buenos para lo hermoso que son los paisajes. La ventaja es que la huasteca potosina aun no es muy conosida, devemos de aprovecharla ahorita ya que cada ano el tourismo aumenta causando el aumento en precios. Me gusto mucho tu video, me da gusto ver que el hogar de mis padres es admirado por extranjeros. 🙂
Wow, Ich war begeistert von der Lektüre dieses. Meine Eltern sind aus Täler Stadt, aber seit seiner Kindheit beschlossen, Georgia, wo er und gewachsen zu bewegen. Jedes Jahr haben wir unsere Familie in Täler besuchen und die Gelegenheit nutzen, neue Orte von Huasteca zu sehen. Es ist wirklich schön, magische und ruhige. Die Orte, die Sie die bekanntesten erwähnt sind, sondern auch hai an anderer Stelle nicht entdeckt worden sind wirklich schön! Ein pasadado viele Jahre und weiß immer noch nicht ganz vollständig die Huasteca, jedes Mal, wenn Sie etwas Neues entdecken! Ich bin froh zu sehen, dass Ausländer waren auch wunderbar paresca. Devemos de aprovechar ahorita la huateca antes de que el turismo cresca causando la elevadura de precios. Espero la parte 2!!
